Source Documents

These are documents from which transactions posted into the books of accounts are extracted. In other words, source documents are documents that authenticate a business transaction. As business transactions are carried out on daily basis, they are entered into the source documents before posting can be made to the books of accounts

Examples of source documents include:

a)    Receipt

b)   Deposit slip

c)    Payment voucher

d)    Cheque stub

e)    Sales invoice (or sales bill)

f)     Purchases invoice

g)    Credit note

h)    Debit note

i)     Purchases order

j)     Sales order

k)    Goods received note
