Ratio: Question 7

A man rewards his three children based on their yearly academic performance. If the first child gets twice as much as the third, and the second gets half as much as the third, Calculate how much money each gets assuming total amount of ¥875000 is the reward
Solution
Let the children be A, B & C
From the question, we deduce that
A = 2C and
B  = ½C
Let B’s share = ¥x
Then if B is half of C,
I.e. B = ½ C and b = ¥x
Then x = ½C
By cross multiplication, we have
C = 2 * x
C = 2x
If A = 2C, and C = 2x
Then A = 2 * 2x
A = 4x
Thus ratio A : B : C = 4x : x : 2x
Total ratio = 4x + 1x + 2x = 7x
Total amount shared = ¥875000
A’s share = 4x/7x * 875000
                = ¥500,000
B’s share = 1x/7x * 875000
                = ¥125,000
C’s share = 2x/7x * 875000
                = ¥250,000
